CAMBODIA. Phnom Penh. A man smokes “yabaa” (crazy drug, a cheap metamphetamine) as a woman injects heroin in the streets of the capital city. Heroin use is on the rise in Phnom Penh as the impoverished country attempts to modernize and new social pressures surface. Without an effective needle exchange program many addicts are HIV positive or bound to become infected. Methamphetamine is very addictive and it can increase sexual arousal while reducing inhibitions. Methamphetamine use has been linked with increased numbers of HIV infections.
