Yasothon’s Rocket Festival

The Thai town of Yasothon stages its world-famous Rocket Festival annually in the middle of May. Known locally as Bun Bang Fai, the festival is a merit-making ceremony traditionally practiced by ethnic Lao people throughout much of northeast Thailand and Laos near the beginning of the rainy season. Following a day of street parades, on the final day the rockets are fired into the air to encourage the coming of the rains ahead of the planting season. Those whose rockets misfire are thrown in mud pools.
